    Using genetic manipulation, we can show that smooth muscle Kir6.1/SUR2 channel overactivity reduces contractility and transit throughout the intestine, but this can be inhibited by sulfonylureas.

    This defines the molecular basis of gut KATP channels, the mechanism of GI insufficiency in  Cantu syndrome, and a viable approach to therapy.

    Planned studies will seek to understand the role of other KATP subunits in GI function.
